The making of VendrTV
By Daniel Delaney on April 14, 2009

Over the past few weeks I’ve been recieving a bunch of emails about how we produce the show and what goes into each episode. Here’s an overview.

Research

Each episode starts with a fairly intensive research phase. I spend a good amount of time reaching out to food writers in different locales to learn about local favorites and secrets. I then take those tips (along with suggestions sent in by viewers) and flesh them out, gathering more data. If it’s solid, I reach out to them to schedule a shoot. When available, I venture to the venues myself to try the food beforehand.

Production Crew

We arrive at each shoot with a crew of three people, and myself. We have two camera men, John de Menil and Noah Schwartz, and shoot in HD on Panasonic HVX cameras. Additionally, our sound is mixed on location by Ryan Miller. We had once used wireless microphones, but have instead opted to hard wiring everything as interference in cities can be rough.

Each shoot takes around three hours on location.

Post Production

After everything is shot, it gets edited in Final Cut Pro. Currently I handle most of the editing, but occasionally toss it up to Andy Buckmaster and Noah Schwartz. After we finish a rough cut, we review and tweak. Then color correction and sound mixing happens. Finally, we add in our wonderful motion graphic elements, created by Eden Soto and render!

Distribution & Web

Once the episodes are done, I upload them to Blip.tv, and then write up the blog post on our website. The website is was created by Frank LaRocca and built on Wordpress.

In addition to watching the video on our site, it is available as a podcast through iTunes and on YouTube.

Additionally we have just started posting behind the scenes footage and outtakes on our Facebook page, and promote the show using Twitter.

If you have any other questions of comments, please feel free to email.

Very cool insight as to the process:)

How many hours do you spend on each episode? How many total man hours per episode? What’s your rough cost per episode? …..just wondering.

  2. Daniel Delaney says:

    Good questions Bear –
I spend around 15 hours per episode. A total of 25 man hours, if we include the production crew.

My guess is that if you were to replicate this production, you’d be incurring costs of around $3500 per episode.

    Hi,
Im surprised with the colors of each video pisode. What software or plugin uses so that the videos are seen so brilliant?

    • Daniel Delaney says:

Besides having the color just slightly saturated when we shoot, we don’t enhance it post production. :)

Hi, very well done… i have an idea for a creating a show. Do you have any insight for the economics of creating an online series? How does your show generate revenue, what are the potential revenue streams?

    cheers, jim

Loved the mobile pizza video. Note, generally it's 'i' before 'e' except after 'c' so check your spelling of 'receiving' above, you have 'recieving'.
