Bacon Dogs (San Francisco, CA)

19th & Mission

Late night in San Francisco’s Mission District is a swirl of bars, tacorias, and my favorite late night fare: hot dogs wrapped in bacon. Also known as a Mexican Hot Dog, these flavor packed weenies are spicy, sweet, and super savory. We met up with one of the vendors around 19th and Mission. She was a sweetheart, and even got into the production as I turned the tables, giving Andy and Florian the spotlight.

All in all, it’s a fun episode… and man… how I miss those dogs!

Question of the week!

Describe your ideal hot dog, toppings and all.

I wrap my hot dogs in bacon then add Japanese mayo and nori flakes. So good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Daniel-Delaney/56600006 Daniel Delaney

Dude – that's intense. Is Japanese mayo just mayo with wasabi?

      • http://eattoblog.com/ Donny

Duh, I just realized my icon is a photo of Howard. Anyways, have you never had Japanese mayo before??!?! Japanese mayo is made from rice vinegar though the Kewpie brand has a wasabi flavor mayo.

I have been finding a common strength amongst these vendors. I noticed that the west coast street vendors are posting their menus and locations on Twitter. Using Free Media to work for them. I understand that some people are lining up to eat at these places an hour before the trucks show up. I am so excited about this movement, as a chef, I have always defined that the one thing to break my restaurant is always the service staff. This removes the need for them altogether. I love the bacon wrapped angioplasty dawg! I think if I am drunk, then bring on the grease.

On my red hot, I like a smokey sausage type, cooked over coal, wrapped in flour tortilla, caramelized onions, jalapeno jam, and don't laugh….cream cheese smear.

You know what Christian! I've had cream cheese on a dog before and it was pretty rockin'… so, no laugh there. That sounds delicious!

I am kind of a purist. Raw onions, and yellow mustard. That's it. All though I have been known to make a brunch dog that is bacon-wrapped, and sitting in the bun that has had a fried egg placed in it.

      Mmmm egg on meat. Delicious!

Great to see Andy and Flo on camera. My favorite hot dog/ topping is a Boar’s head barker cooked over a campfire in my backyard, on a Martin’s potato roll, a little Grey Poupon Country style mustard and some creamy coleslaw on top… a cold beer to wash it down. Try one Dan, it’s better than Spam on a stick… Ken

I see that the idea of the cased meat has evolved all over the globe, but as a resident of Chicago….Dirty Water Dog Capital of the universe, I have to give a notable accolade to my favorite innovator of the weinner. Hot Doug's off California Ave in Chicago….very cool stuff at his little eatery. World class flavor profiles.

Just found your site, and lucky for me, I have hot dogs in the fridge. The power of suggestion. Tomatoes are my topping of choice. They add a hint of sweet, surprisingly.
BTW, love what you're doing! If you ever eat your way to Austin, there's been a surge of foodie airstreams in the past year… everything from cupcakes to crepes! This article lists of a number of them. http://www.austinchronicle.com/gyrobase/Issue/s…

That's amazing! Thanks for the tips Amy. Hopefully we'll be down there
      soon.

Just came across this website *thumbs up*.. But just gotta say: how dare that guy say that the bacon dog cart is all San Francisco has and call it the “pathetic version of street food”! What an insult to that hard working lady! I doubt he’s even from SF. Next time you’re in the area, check out one of the many food carts in the SF: http://twitter.com/sfcarts/san-francisco-food-carts

As for my ideal hot dog.. Japadog from Vancouver: teriyaki sauce, japanese mayo, nori strips, and onions. http://www.japadog.com/en/

Yea man – The guy was a bit of a jerk – But I do think he was just talking about the lack of street food in the city. But as you point out, that's really changing. The guy's just not in the know. Oh well – his loss.

Those are the best. They used to call them Danger Dogs in LA. We sell them as Devil Dogs at Mardi Gras and during certain festivals. The sweet lady in the video has them exactly right and anyone calling them pathetic does not grok street food. Danger Dogs belong in the Cartivore Hall of Fame if there were one. FWIW our version is pretty much like hers, with grilled peppers, onions, Ketchup, Mustard, Mayo, and Sriracha. So good, especially after a night out. So hot, they'll burn you twice, but worth it.

Oh my that looks so delicious. I couldn’t walk by that vendor everyday and not buy something. I have the same weakness for Krystal burgers.
