George’s Sandwiches (Philadelphia, PA)

900 South 9th Street

Since I started VendrTV, Philadelphia-based food writer Holly Moore has been an inspiration. His website, HollyEats.com, is jam packed with diners, roadside shacks, and bbq joints all across America. In fact, many of our favorite episodes are directly inspired by his findings. So it was only natural that he joined me on an episode in his hometown.

The two of us visited George’s Sandwiches, a small window that faces out onto the Italian Market, as it has for years. And they do all the Philly classics like Cheesesteaks, Roast Pork, and Hoagies. Delicious!

    Best episode yet.

Thanks for including my grease stains and I in VendrTV. It was a fun shoot though I pretty much ruined one of my favorite shirts..

Let me know when you’re back in town. Plenty of great eating including two new trucks – one doing sausages and one doing fancy hot dogs.

Holly Eats is my primary resource any time I take a road trip. There is no one’s tastebuds who I appreciate more.

I am glad to see that you made it back to philly for a real cheese steak sandwhich But a Bit disapointed that you didnt try PATS KING OF STEAKS, the originator of the cheese steak sandwhich, or maybe you did?. To me a cheese steak with WIZ, peppers n onions is the only way to go. also cheeze wiz was the first cheese to go on the steak sandwhich back in the 50′s when it first came to market, american, provolone and others were just afterthoughts.
    Peace.

      Hi Chris -
I lived in Philly for five years and know Pat’s very well. While it was the original, I don’t think it’s very good at all. Plus, it’s very touristy. My personal favorite is Phillip’s on Passyunk… Dalessandro’s is great too.

Also, provolone was the first cheese.

        Greetings Dan,

Right about provolone, semi-right about Pat’s. At the right time, which is never on a weekend when there’s a line around the building, Pat’s is capable of building a great cheesesteak. I’ll usually hit them during the week just before or after when normal people eat lunch. Almost always – an excellent cheesesteak.

I’ve received a lot of good feedback about the episode. Kudos also on the camera work and the editing. Nice tight work.

I lived in Philadelphia for a few years, actually it was quite common to get cheese steaks with provolone or American cheese. I used to get them from an establishment called Billy Bob’s, those were steaks!!! Eating them with Cheez Whiz is too messy.
