    Dan,

Wow what an excellent series. I found out about your site through a daily radio show that I listen to up here on our CBC.

Up north here in Canada we have a lot of trouble getting great street food due to over zealous public health laws. Recently Toronto has allowed lisences for "ethinic food carts" so we may see our first Thia food carts and falafel carts rolling out onto the streets. The only down side to this recent development is that the cart license and start up fee are equal to close to $35,000. Ya no kidding ! Are most of the carts in NY licensed or are they just sort of a grey area legally?

When ever I travel I make a point of sampling as much of the local street fair as I can. One of the best places to eat off the street (and cheapest) was in Barrinquia Colombia. Their carts where mostly donkey powered but the amazing dishes they came up with where limitless.

Please keep up the great work.

Dan, if you think the 53rd and 6th Halal Guys are good, you haven't tried Sammy's Halal out on the corner of 73rd and Broadway in Jackson Heights, Queens. Sammy's won the 2006 Vendy Award for best street cart in NYC. This cart in Jackson Heights is the original, but supposedly there are at least a handful of other carts opened by the owner, Samiul Haque Noor.

I find the rice to be just as fluffy, but it has a certain flavor to it that I can't pinpoint. The Halal Guys' rice is fluffy, but that's it. Also, Sammy's chicken is cooked with lots of cilantro, which adds a nice zing to it. Finally, they have a secret weapon in their "green sauce". Yes, Sammy's also has white sauce and hot sauce, but their green sauce is nothing I've ever experienced at any other halal stand. It's tastes like a perfect blend of white sauce and spiciness, without going overboard.

I hope you try it one day, I highly recommend it!

Hey Andy - I've had Sammy's Halal a few times. I agree with you, it's great. And perhaps one day we'll cover it for the show.

We new we wanted to cover one a Halal Cart near to the beginning of the series and had trouble deciding over Sammy's, The Halal Guys, Kahns, or Qwik Meal. Ultimately we went with The Halal Guys because of the culture that surrounds the cart.

Thanks for the suggestion either way!
  • That's hilarious! I've got to give it to 'em, they've got gumption. Although it's sketchy, it makes business sense.

On a separate note....I was curious if you have a workout regime....seeing that you're eating a lot of "good eats"?
