The Magic Carpet (Philadelphia, PA)

36th and Spruce St.

This week Dan checked out The Magic Carpet, an all vegaterian cart on The University of Pennsylvania’s campus in West Philadelphia. While there he sampled owner Dean Varvoutis’ tofu meatballs and seitan platter, both of which were stellar!

Haha, “bacon on Cheerios.” I love it. Prove it :)

I find it funny when veggie places make items like “tofu meatballs”, why not just call them something entirely different?

I love when non-vegetarians eat veggie because it’s just that darned good!

Since your in philly i am surprised you haven’t touched on the best place there is. that being Pats Steaks, the originator of the philly cheesesteak sandwhich. remember this guy started out as a street vendor and is still one today, even though his digs are a little more permenant. it would be a travesty to miss featuring this icon of what street food venders are attempting to achieve.

Did you design the site on your own or is this a free template? Either way, it looks great. Cheers.

As an off and on again Atkins Diet loser, I’ve decided that I’ve got to hit this cart when I get off the diet and down there. I bet it’s worth every carb!

Last summer when I worked down the street, I literally ate Magic Carpet three times a week. Their soups are amazing (especially mulligatawny) and I’m a huge fan of the magic meatballs.

Only downside is everything is made in advance at a commissary and kept warm in steam trays. Would prefer if the stuff was a little fresher, but its a small cart what are you gonna do? Plus, Dean and Donna are the nicest people ever.

“bacon on Cheerios” was probably one of the best lines ever! I agree with you on the meat-eating aspect- however, when vegetarian is done right, it’s superb. Dal, curry, or tajines are so delicious.

This cart is awesome…but unfortunately completely inaccessible if you’re not a student in West Philly. They should expand…

    That woman was fantastic.

Hey, great article. Gotta love the lovehandles! For me I have found the one true solution in getting rid of them is by simply get my whole bodyfat to sub 10%. I’ve recently become a fan of the Paleo Diet. It’s natural and how Mother Nature intended for us to eat. Check it out sometime and drop me an email with what you think. Anyhow, nice blog – I’m subscribed to your RSS feed now so thanks again!
