Red’s Eats (Wiscasset, ME)

Main St & Water St

Howdy Cartivores!
This week we ventured north east to the great state of Maine to visit Red’s Eats, a street food institution.

While many know this waterside stand for dishing out plump, juicy, lobster rolls, we quickly learned there’s a lot more to Red’s. With menu items stretching from delicious fried clams to huge crab rolls, Red’s takes seafood seriously.

You can learn more about Red’s Eats on one of our favorite sites, HollyEats.com.

it seems you americans have some amazing food & choices, like, everywhere. all we've got over here in england is gregs and pub food. fail
  • What are gregs? Pub food isn't bad!!
  • JennieB121
Red's Eats is NOT my favorite lobster roll to be honest. I think it really misses somethingby not having mayonnaise. For my money, the best Maine Lobster roll is at Maine-ly Delights in Bass Harbor. Very curious how the burger and clams were. I think Bobs Clam Hut in York is pretty good for clams.
  • Hm - I'll have to check those out Jennie!
  • Slappy san
I understand not wanting to hurt but it's a disservice to the people who watch your shows to not be honest. I've watched eps and thought to myself, "I must go there". Now knowing that you are holding back....well I have to look at your show in a totally different way. Sucks since I got hooked on your show.
  • Hey Slappy -
Let me try and clear some things up. I am in no way being dishonest with my audience. The show is about "traveling in search of the BEST street food around." I never intended for it to be a critique forum.

The true story is, we research each cart extensively before we shoot and work with local food writers and critics to ensure the places we cover are exceptional. So, when I say that the food is delicious, it really is.

To date there have been two occasions where we filmed episodes and found that the food wasn't up to our standards. We cut those episodes. They will not air.

Hope this ads some clarity to our review process.

I see you already answered the first question. But what of giving bad reviews?
  • Hey Slappy -
Yes, as stated above, it was just to keep the episode tight. But secondly, I don't think I'm in the business of hurting vendors. I started the show to help showcase those who did exceptional work and deserve the attention.

A bad review can really hurt a vendor, and most of them support their families with their business. I understand how great negative criticism makes for sensational viewership, but it's just not the game I'm in. I really care a lot for street vending. If the product is bad, the lack of repeat customers will be the bearer of bad news, I don't have to be.

Thanks for the question. It's a really good one, and I'm surprised I hadn't been asked it before.

What's the deal? There was a lot of food on those trays. Did you skip reviewing the burger because it sucked? Do you give bad reviews? I can't recall one off the top of my head.
  • Maine is only 3000 miles away from Oregon. And they're open only half the year? Dang... And now I've got a major craving for LOBSTER.
  • I say go for it! Stop in NYC first and pick me up. :) ROAD TRIP!
  • Nate
Check out college food trucks. I'm thinking of the Hot Truck v. Louie's Lunch rivalry at Cornell. The former created the french bread pizza and the latter has been around since 1918 and makes some mean subs. Of course, there are also the Rutgers "grease trucks", but that would require some "adult language". Look up the famous sandwich there and you'll know what I mean.
  • Thanks Nate! Didn't know about them, but I'll check them out.
  • nhuhua
Oh man, I wanna go to New England now...no seriously...now! :-) Great one!
  • clumaster
That is an awesome cart i will definately put that on my "places to go to" list but you left out the haddock and the hamburger, were they that bad that you didnt want to show it?

    Thanks Daniel
  • Nope! They were really great in fact! They were only removed because I wanted to keep the episode tight, and the pace fast.

The true story is that we normally try a lot more food than we show in the episode, it just happened that she decided to list off the items we'd be trying. :)
  • What a scoff! Could so chow down on that lobster. Looks sooo fresh....and nice peeps at 'RedEats'....top show!
  • Hah - it was! You should venture up to visit them. :)
  • Lobster is Great ! I enjoy crustaceans in so many ways, delicious episode Guys.
If I'm ever in Maine, I will go there, oh yes.
  • That'd be a far (but well worthwhile) trek for you!
  • jessicawaters
Dan! I wish you had played that one BEFORE the place closed for the season!! I can hardly wait for April to make the trek up there. That lobster roll looked mind-blowing. My mouth is literally watering.

hey, BTW, I still haven't gotten my sticker!
  • Hey Jess - I know - I'm sorry. Next summer!
  • wolfrun
Mmmmmm.... good. I wish they were open right now. Not just the GREATEST lobster roll but beautiful scenery and local color. How New England seafood should be prepared and enjoyed.
  • :) What do you consider the GREATEST lobster roll?
  • Coppertonedog
Reds has the best food around. There is a reason people wait in line for this stuff! Perhaps the nicest people on earth that work there as well. Debbie is awesome. Go there - you won't regret it!!
  • Agreed - they were all true blue. Do you live near by?
  • monica_araujo123
    You are VendrTvlisious xD
  • Hahaha! Thanks Monica. You're not a bad Cartivore yourself. ;)
  • Good episode, what do they charge for the lobster roll? Sometimes pricing is good just so you have an idea what sort of value there is compared to a restaurant.
  • Hey man - the lobster roll is around 14 dollars (I think), and it's about one and a half lobsters worth of meat. :)
  • Darn you! I don't like seafood, especially not lobster, but this movie made it look so yummy! XD

Thank you for touring all the carts I'll never see. Will you be coming to Canada anytime soon? Unfortunately for me the most advanced food cart I've seen in town here is an ice cream truck. :/ Not much for carts in Windsor Ontario, we have hot dog vendors, and and ice cream that goes around my neighborhood like clockwork every summer.

If I find any carts here that might be more than just a wiener on a bun I'll let you know. :P
  • Yup - I hear you - and it was... absolutely delicious.

Hah, aw, I feel back. You should make a trip to the states. I'll take you around.

Thanks - I appreciate any tips you might have.
  • Two Newfs
I usually don't go above Portland ME - now we'll HAVE to head up to Wiscasset. That they don't use mayonnaise, and I can drown the lobster in butter heaven! plys, the roll looked perfect!
  • Yea - it's totally worth the trip up. Stay tuned, we have another episode coming out from Boothbay, which is even further north.
  • Mmmmm Seafood! I'll eat just about anything that comes out of the water!

I've been to Maine once and ate at the Brunswick Diner. Good Lobster Roll there too! Now I want to go back!
  • I hear that - you know Ken, for a long while I was too nervous to eat seafood. Now I can't get enough of the stuff.

Seems a number of people want to go to Maine after this episode. We should organize a trip up there.
  • hollymoore
Been a couple of years since I've had a lobster roll from Red's Eats. Great video of a great lobster roll. I slosh on both a bit of the mayonnaise and all the butter. Egads, I want one of Red's lobster rolls right now.
  • Holly! So good to see you here. You're an inspiration! Sounds like we need to take a trip up to Maine.
