What Is Hip Arthroscopy, and How Does It Support Hip Preservation?

Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive form of keyhole surgery that allows a surgeon to look inside the hip joint and, where appropriate, treat problems affecting its structures. Unlike hip replacement, which replaces damaged joint surfaces, arthroscopy is used to address specific problems while retaining the patient’s own hip.

What happens during the procedure?

The hip is a ball and socket joint, with the femoral head sitting inside the acetabulum. Around the edge of the socket is the labrum, a ring of fibrocartilage that contributes to the stability and function of the joint.

During the procedure, a small camera is introduced through a small incision so the surgeon can view the joint. Additional small incisions may allow surgical instruments to be inserted.
